Irmgard "Irma" Victoria Thoma of Florence, Kentucky, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at the age of 88. Born on January 21, 1938, in Selb, Germany, Irma's life was marked by resilience, dedication, and kindness.
Irma's early life experiences in Germany during World War II shaped her into the determined and compassionate person she became. Her parents secretly resisted the Nazis, doing what they could to help French prisoners of war. Irma later recalled receiving letters of gratitude from soldiers who made it home, thanks to her family's kindness.
Irma had a large age gap with her siblings, being 12 years younger than her closest sibling. Her brother, William "Willie" Thoma, tragically died after joining the German army, succumbing to an infection, while her sister Eleanore "Ellie" Thoma avoided Nazi influence due to their parents' efforts.
Recognizing Irma's intelligence, her parents sent her to the United States to further her education. She completed high school at Western Hills High in Cincinnati and earned a degree through night classes at the University of Cincinnati.
Irma broke barriers at Cincinnati Gas & Electric by becoming the company's first female manager, inspiring many women in the industry. At 18, she brought Ellie to the U.S. and later cared for their mother, who moved to join them after their father's death.
Following their mother’s passing, the sisters relocated to Florence, Kentucky. As Ellie lost her sight, Irma retired to care for her until Ellie passed away in 2009.
Irma is remembered by her dear friends and cousins for her warmth, genuine spirit, and unwavering support. She was preceded in death by her parents, Georg and Johanna Thoma, and her siblings, Willie and Ellie Thoma.
A visitation will be held at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home in Erlanger, KY, on Monday, August 24, 2026, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, followed by a memorial service at 7:00 pm. Family, friends, and all those whose lives Irmgard touched are invited to celebrate her life.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, a cause close to Irmgard's heart. Arrangements have been entrusted to Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, ensuring her life is honored with respect and dignity. Irma will be fondly remembered for her contributions to her community, trailblazing career, and the love she shared with those around her.
